Finally, a flower pot that’s actually impossible to forget to water—because you're going to eat it! These Flower Pot Dessert Cups are the ultimate ‘trick' treat for Mother’s Day or Earth Day. They look like actual garden starts but taste like chocolate heaven. Best of all? No green thumb or actual baking required.
The three basic ingredients are Chocolate pudding, milk and Oreos. I also used some chocolate “rock” candy but that is completely optional. (You can find these in the bulk section of Winco.) You will also need, Flower Pot Votives, plastic green straws and silk flowers. Get creative with the flowers there are many to choose from. (Recipe makes 8)I
First, put the whole package of Oreos through a food processor to make fine crumbs.
If the kids want to make this by themselves, have them use a rolling pin to crush the Oreo's in a plastic zip-top storage bag.
Mix the chocolate pudding per the instructions on the box. When it is mixed together, add 1 cup of Oreo crumbs and stir together.
Fill the flower pots with 1/2 cup of the pudding mixture. Leave a 1/4″-1/2″ room at the top and spoon the remaining Oreo crumbs on top of the pudding. Put them into the fridge to set for at least 10 minutes.
While the pudding sets, you can prep the silk flowers. (I got this bunch at Michael's for 50% off but Dollar Tree also has some silk flowers.) First, cut the flower stems off the base so that they will be a little taller than your cups. (You may need wire cutters for this. They sell them at Dollar Tree if you don't have any.) Using scissors, cut the straws down to about an inch taller than the votive holder.
Slide the flowers and leaves into the straws. One flower stem and 2 leaf stems fit snuggly into the straw for me.
Pull the pudding cups out of the fridge and put the flowers in the center. I added 2 or 3 of these little chocolate rocks from Winco's bulk food to finish it off. Totally optional, though. You could also use dry vanilla pudding for “sand” or pop some gummy worms in for a crawly “garden” theme.
Pro-Tip: Make These Sweet Treats Ahead of Time
One of the best things about these Flower Pot Dessert Cups is that you can do most of the work before the party starts. However, to keep them looking (and tasting) fresh, follow this schedule:
-
24 Hours Before: You can mix the pudding and Oreo “dirt” and fill the votive holders. Cover them tightly with plastic wrap and keep them in the fridge.
-
The Morning Of: Prep your flowers and straws.
-
Right Before Serving: This is the secret! Wait to add the final layer of Oreo crumbs and the flowers until you are ready to serve. If the crumbs sit on the pudding for too long, they lose that “crunchy dirt” texture and get a bit soft.
So, so easy and such a cute dessert. Great for kids to make because there is no baking involved. Also, don't throw the flowers away when you are done, you can just slip them into a new straw for the next time you want to make grow I mean make, these cute Flower Pot Dessert Cups.
